WESTMINSTER — A man was wounded Wednesday afternoon during a gun battle with robbers who forced their way into his apartment, police said.
Javier Quintero, 27, of Westminster was shot in the arms and legs during the gunfight with two men who demanded cash at gunpoint after breaking into his apartment in the 8000 block of Trask Avenue about 5:45 p.m., said Sgt. Mark Groh.
When the men tried to handcuff Quintero, he broke free, grabbed his own handgun and opened fire, setting off a gun battle that spilled onto the street outside, Groh said.
Quintero told authorities that he believes he shot one of the intruders during the exchange, and police found undisclosed evidence indicating that at least one of the gunmen was injured, Groh said.
The bandits fled in a red Chevrolet Camaro built before 1990.
Quintero was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was reported to be in guarded condition late Wednesday night.
