Mathews Says Cal Poly SLO Courting Him

Philip Mathews, who coached the Ventura College men’s basketball team to the junior college state title this season, said he has been contacted by officials at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo about the school’s vacant coaching position.
“They have asked me if I’m interested,” Mathews said. “I’m interested in talking, but I haven’t decided anything.”
San Luis Obispo fired Steve Beason after the Mustangs finished 1-26 in their first season in Division I and were 0-6 in the four-team American West Conference.
It was the third consecutive losing season for the Mustangs under Beason, who coached the team for nine seasons. Until this season, San Luis Obispo had played in Division II.
The Mustangs will join the Big West Conference for the 1996-97 season.
