NORTHRIDGE — A burglary suspect tried to run down police officers with a van and the officers opened fire, inflicting superficial injuries, Los Angeles police reported.
Richard Rodrigue, 39, was waiting in a van near Balboa Boulevard and Parthenia Street at approximately 9 p.m. Thursday when an accomplice, Sam Cordova, 36, was sighted by police leaving a local business with stolen property, a police statement said.
Seeing the officers, Cordova dropped the goods and fled in the van with Rodrigue and 23-year-old Cara Haisler, police said.
Trapped on Aqueduct Street, a dead end, Rodrigue made a U-turn and tried to run down Officer Danny Shry, who jumped clear, the police statement said.
Trapped again on Stroud Street, another dead end, Rodrigue aimed the van in the direction of officers Maureen Geller and Timothy Scully, and Scully fired two shots, the report said.
Rodrigue was treated at the scene for superficial injuries to the face, left shoulder and right thigh. He, Cordova and Haisler were arrested on suspicion of burglary, police said.
The officers and other suspects were not injured.
