Romain Latham Johnston; Emmy-Winning Art Director

Romain Latham Johnston, 65, who won three Emmy awards for his production designs and art direction. Born in Flint, Mich., Johnston was educated at Carnegie-Mellon University. He began his career in New York City designing such ABC television shows as “The Voice of Firestone” and “The Pat Boone Show,” and theater productions including the revue “I Feel Wonderful.” The versatile Johnston moved to Los Angeles as television grew, and designed for series with stars such as Milton Berle, Jim Nabors, Barbara Mandrell and Glenn Campbell, and specials for Victor Borge, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Frank Sinatra, among others. He won Emmys for designing the “Mac Davis Show,” Richard Pryor’s “Pryor’s Place” and a special “Ben Vereen: His Roots.” On March 17 in Washington of leukemia.
