COMEDY TREND

I think David Kronke’s article last Sunday correctly captured the stand-up-to-sitcom trend (“The Big Payoff”). However, his historical examples miss the mark.
It’s true that comedians generally favored variety shows in the ‘60s, but Don Rickles also had a sitcom in the ‘70s. “C.P.O. Sharkey” ran from 1976 to 1978 and starred Rickles as a Navy man whose character was substantially based on Rickles’ insult-style stand-up routine.
