Olympics

A plan to impose unannounced drug tests in all Olympic sports in the United States probably will be delayed until after the Atlanta Games next summer.

U.S. Olympic Committee executive director Dick Schultz said discussions were still taking place on the proposal, which would require all sports federations to conduct random tests of their athletes on short notice. Only a few sports currently do so.

The plan had been expected to receive approval when the USOC board meets Sunday. Schultz did not explain the delay but said that several “minor irritants to athletes” had emerged.

Today the team will compete in the optional exercises and try to win only its second men’s team medal ever. The first was a bronze in 1979.

The Americans were third after the compulsories, behind first-place Japan and defending champion China.

The top 12 teams qualify for the 1996 Olympic Games. The U.S. men placed ninth in last year’s World Championships.
