Defending champion Monique Kalkman of the Netherlands appeared on course to earn her fourth singles title when she defeated Arcadia’s Gina Jalbert in the opening round, 6-4, 6-0, at the 16th U.S. Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships at the Irvine Racquet Club.
In the men’s division, all of the seeded players advanced in second-round play, including Oceanside’s Jim Black, who beat Ralph Weisang of Germany, 6-0, 6-4.

The offer made to restricted free agent LeRon Ellis by the Minnesota Timberwolves was matched by the Charlotte Hornets. Terms of the agreement were not released.
The 6-foot-10 Ellis, a Mater Dei graduate, spent the 1993-94 season in Charlotte after signing on as a free agent before training camp. He appeared in 50 games with the Hornets, averaging 4.4 points and 3.8 rebounds.
