Ken Griffey Sr., who spent the last four seasons in the Seattle organization, was hired as the Colorado Rockies’ batting coach.
Swimming
Jessica Foschi, a national-class swimmer on probation for flunking a steroid test, won the preliminary heats of two freestyle events in the New York state public high school championships at Buffalo. Foschi, a 15-year-old sophomore at Friends Academy on Long Island, broke her own state record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4 minutes 46.97 seconds.
