From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A three-alarm fire erupted in a lower floor of the Empire State Building when a transformer exploded in a cellar. Twenty-two people suffered minor injuries, mostly smoke inhalation. Eight girls visiting New York City to march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade were treated at the scene, said David Bookstaver, a spokesman for the Emergency Medical Service. Their hometowns were unavailable. Most of the building’s offices were closed at the time, but firefighters still had to evacuate at least 200 people and even more walked out unescorted.
