A 48-year-old mother of two and her pet dog were killed in a house fire early Friday, officials said.
The victim’s husband and two teenage sons escaped from the burning home but the woman either was unable to get out or returned inside to save the dog, a Fire Department spokesman said.
The house had barred windows, but the survivors escaped after opening an internal release bar on the second floor. They suffered minor smoke inhalation and were taken to Kaiser Foundation Hospital in West Los Angeles.
The fire on 105th Street was reported just before 3 a.m. The cause has not yet been determined, officials said.
Twenty-five firefighters extinguished the blaze in less than an hour, officials said. Damage to the structure and contents was estimated at $75,000.
