Nation IN BRIEF : MASSACHUSETTS : Vatican Envoy Faces Campaign Charges
- Share via
Prosecutors accused Raymond L. Flynn, U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, of wrongfully using campaign funds, and indicted two aides from Flynn’s days as mayor of Boston. State Atty. Gen. Scott Harshbarger said in Boston that prosecutors were preparing to sue Flynn for using campaign money for family trips, meals and entertainment from 1988 to 1993. Flynn also accepted thousands of dollars in contributions that never were recorded on finance statements or deposited in committee bank accounts, Harshbarger said. Flynn, in Rome, issued a statement saying he would repay any expenses that investigators deemed improper. He also denied a report in the Boston Globe that he has told diplomats he plans to resign this month.
