HALLANDALE, Fla. — Trainer Frank Passero Jr. broke a national record Thursday by saddling his ninth and 10th consecutive winners at Gulfstream Park.
“We’ll all go out to dinner tonight,” Passero said, “and I imagine I’ll be picking up the tab.”
The record of nine wins in a row was held by four trainers.
The first eight victories in Passero’s streak were by decisive margins, but he won close races with a pair of favorites Thursday.
Apple Of My Eye, the 1-2 favorite in the fifth race, was third at the quarter pole and even with long-shot Gone Clear at the sixteenth pole before winning by a neck.
Satin Sunrise, the 3-5 favorite in the sixth race, was head to head with two other horses at mid-stretch. She pulled away in the final 70 yards to beat On Alert Lt. by 1 1/4 lengths.
Shane Sellers rode both winners, who were claimed after their races. Apple Of My Eye paid $3, while Satin Sunrise returned $3.20.--Associated Press
