Nation IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : New Vaccines Fight Whooping Cough

Three vaccines designed to prevent whooping cough without causing serious side effects have been found to be more effective than the conventional vaccine, according to two new studies. The findings, to be published in the New England Journal of Medicine, are expected to help doctors regain the edge in the fight against whooping cough. The illness has had a resurgence in recent years because parents have stopped immunizing their children out of fear of the swelling and fever that the conventional vaccine often causes.
