Two Sherman Oaks residents have been chosen to lead the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Adopt-A-School Council, which bills itself as the nation’s largest local educational partnership program.
Walter S. Zeisl, supervisor of educational services for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and Bill Kabaker, president of the Herlin Co., will serve as president and president pro tem, respectively.
Among the goals of the council this year, Zeisl said in a statement, are supporting and promoting the district’s Standards and Assessment Project, which is geared to systematically improving student achievement, and helping implement and expand the LEARN reform efforts.
The council is an umbrella organization representing more than 1,000 companies, governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations and individuals that have adopted schools in the district.
Adoptors annually provide about 18,000 volunteers and $18 million in support for their adopted schools. About 90% of district schools have been adopted.
