Chatsworth Hires Alotis as Girls’ Basketball Coach

Raquel Alotis, a former basketball player at UC Santa Barbara, has been selected girls’ basketball coach at Chatsworth High.

Alotis, a member of Peninsula High’s state championship team, will also teach at Chatsworth. She replaces Andre Hayes, who was removed as coach.

The Ventura County Basketball Coaches All-Star Games will be played June 6 at Ventura High.

The girls play at 6 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m. Three-point shooting and slam-dunk contests will be held at halftime and between games.

Coaches for the girls’ game are Emily Stenzel of Santa Paula (North) and Don McMaster of Westlake (South). The boys’ coaches are Harry Burns of Fillmore (North) and Tim Bednar of Moorpark (South).

Tim Knight has resigned after one season as girls’ basketball coach at Highland High, Athletic Director Paul Arnold said.

Knight led the Bulldogs to an 18-6 record and their first appearance in the section playoffs.

Assistant Ron Haywood, a candidate for Knight’s job, will serve as interim coach until a permanent coach is hired.

FENCING

Derek Snyder, a freshman fencer at Chaminade High, has qualified to compete this summer at the first World Youth Games in Moscow.

The July event features athletes from 130 countries in 13 sports, all under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee.

Snyder is ranked No. 2 by the U.S. Fencing Assn. in youth-14 men’s epee and men’s foil.

TRACK AND FIELD

Northridge will host the Big Sky outdoor track championships next year, May 12-15. Idaho State will host the indoor meet Feb. 21-23.

HONORS

Harvard-Westlake water polo Coach Rich Corso has been inducted into the Southern Connecticut State University sports hall of fame.
