5 UCI Students Win Science Honors
Crediting their experiences in undergraduate research, five UC Irvine juniors and seniors recently won national fellowships and scholarships in the sciences.
Catharine Larsen and David Snyder were awarded the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, Kristi Montooth was named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Predoctoral Fellow, and Vanessa Beauchamp and Ruben Alarcon won National Science Foundation fellowships.
The Goldwater scholarship rewards excellence in natural science, engineering and mathematics. Nationwide, only 316 students won the award, eight of them at UC campuses.
The Howard Hughes fellowship focuses on biomedical research, and Montooth is only the second UCI student ever to win the award.
Both UCI students who won science foundation research fellowships are majoring in biological sciences.
