Katella Wins Both Titles Again; Mejia Outruns Herrera

Katella won the boys’ and girls’ team championships in the Empire League cross-country finals Thursday at Irvine Regional Park as the Knights’ Daniel Mejia and Jonalyn Smith won individual titles.
Mejia covered the three-mile course in 15 minutes 17 seconds to upset Loara’s Jose Herrera, who placed ninth in the state last year and was previously undefeated in league this season. Herrera finished second in 15:36 for Loara, which had 63 points.
Katella, which had 19 points, won its ninth consecutive title.
Smith’s victory in 19:56 led the Katella girls’ team to its fifth consecutive league title.
