Newhall Municipal Court’s first female judge and a newly appointed court commissioner took their oaths of office in front of the local courthouse Thursday.
Judge Cynthia L. Ulfig was sworn in by the man she replaced, retired Judge H. Keith Byram.
Ulfig was appointed by Gov. Pete Wilson in June. She previously had worked in the Los Angeles district attorney’s office for 15 years where she worked as a trial attorney and served as deputy district attorney.
Commissioner Thomas R. White was given the oath by Newhall Municipal Court Judge Floyd V. Baxter. White was appointed by local judges in February.
Court commissioners are employed by trial courts to preside over divorces, traffic violations, small claims and sometimes larger cases.
