Prop. 9
I am weary of the claims being made against the California electric utilities in order to seduce support for Prop. 9. The utilities have always labored under the tight control of the Public Utilities Commission. The PUC made the decision to deregulate, in order to bring the consumer a better deal. An amazing amount of time and energy was consumed negotiating a deal that was as fair as possible, and all concerned--including the malcontents involved in creating Prop. 9--were agreeably involved in those negotiations.
Deregulation was not the utilities’ idea. They were satisfied with the status quo. To now accuse them of some sinister plot is absurd and consciously dishonest. They simply did their best to survive an arbitrary deal foisted upon them. Those behind Prop. 9 are fundamentally anti-big-business, and will not be satisfied with anything less than bankrupting these utilities, just because they are big business! A vote against Prop. 9 will save the people of California unbelievable turmoil and expense.
