OUTLOOK
Irvine kept it exciting last year, losing one-point games to San Clemente and Woodbridge, and winning three times by six points or fewer, including 30-29 over University and 17-14 over Anaheim. The Vaqueros also hung tough against Mater Dei. Fifteen starters return. Van De Mergel (Gresham, Ore.) is a transfer, and Irvine’s offense could get off to a slow start until league begins. Solid receivers, a terrific left tackle (Dickie) and an experienced defense should help Van de Mergel’s transition.
SCHEDULE
Sept. 11 vs. University; 18 vs. Saddleback; 25 at South Torrance.
Oct. 3 vs. Mater Dei at Santa Ana Stadium; 9 vs. Loara; 16 vs. Woodbridge; 24 vs. El Toro; 30 vs. Corona del Mar at Newport Harbor HS.
Nov. 7 vs. Santa Margarita; 13 vs. Newport Harbor.
