Tougher Regulations on Clinics Overruled

A federal judge in Columbia, S.C., struck down the state’s 1996 abortion clinic regulations, calling them an unconstitutional infringement on a woman’s right to an abortion. U.S. District Judge William Traxler said South Carolina’s clinics have operated safely for nearly 25 years. But the state “loaded these abortion clinics down with so many unnecessary requirements that this court has no choice but to conclude that the regulation unduly burdens a woman’s fundamental right to undergo an abortion,” he wrote.
