Fell Helps Irvine Win Volleyball Tournament

Irvine defeated Manhattan Beach Mira Costa in two games to win the 32-team Redondo Union boys’ volleyball tournament at Redondo Union High Saturday.

The Vaqueros won, 15-8, 15-9, and went 7-0 in the two-day tournament.

B.J. Fell was named tournament MVP and teammates Justin Marayag and Kris Kraushaar were named to the all-tournament team.

In nonleague baseball:

Pacifica 5-14, Santa Ana 4-4--Alfonso Auelua hit a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the first game for Pacifica. Auelua hit the home run on an 0-2 fastball.

Jacob Clark went the final three innings for the Mariners to pick up the victory. Clark (2-1) also won the second game, which was shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule. Rey Santos had a double, home run and four RBIs and Bryan Kelley had a home run, three runs and two RBIs for the Mariners (7-11-1).

Brandon Bedolla tripled for Pacifica, which scored nine runs in the second inning of the second game. Rey Flores hit a home run for Santa Ana.

Redlands Arrowhead Christian 12, Capistrano Valley Christian 1 (6, mercy)--Host Capistrano Valley Christian (10-7) committed six errors leading to eight unearned runs.

Saddleback 8, Los Amigos 4--Saddleback’s Oscar Guzman led off the game with a home run and Edgar Valenzuela had two doubles for the Roadrunners. Omar Martinez (1-3) gave up one hit in four innings of relief to earn the victory. Martinez also had a two-run double in the seventh that helped put the game out of reach.

In Century League softball:

Santa Ana Valley 3, Orange 0--Arlene Newton pitched a shutout with seven strikeouts for host Santa Ana Valley (7-14, 1-5). Newton also tripled, stole three bases and scored a run.
