Growth Estimates for Schools May Be High

Despite dire warnings, the space crunch hitting Simi Valley schools won’t be as bad as initially thought, officials said Tuesday.
Now that school has been in session nearly a week, 1999 estimates by the Simi Valley Facilities Master Plan Committee on the number of new students may have been high, officials said.
“This just points out to how difficult it is to track those numbers,” said Mike Murphy, former chairman of the facilities committee, which produced he report in September 1999.
The committee reported that Simi Valley Unified School District could expect more than 3,000 additional students in kindergarten through sixth grade in the next 10 years, a 2.55% annual jump. The report also estimated enrollment in grades seven and eight would increase 41% over the next 10 years, adding more than 1,000 students.
District officials have since determined not as many students are expected in Simi Valley schools as initially projected.
