John Ashcroft

* Thank you for that sobering and incisive assessment of John Ashcroft’s nomination for attorney general (“The Conscience of a Pentecostal,” by Martin E. Marty, Opinion, Jan. 28). I too am an evangelical Christian committed to scriptural truths and commands.
Thus I find it breathtakingly appalling that Ashcroft is so power-hungry he would willingly subscribe to enforcing laws he declares he finds totally unscriptural and abhorrent. Either this means he is intending to change or subvert those laws--or has no moral convictions whatever. Compared with a giant like Janet Reno, flawed, but a solid rock of integrity, Ashcroft’s so-called “preferences” seem like a slippery slope of rapidly melting Jello.

* I must protest Conrad’s cartoon (Commentary, Jan 29). While I hold no brief for either the Klan or the Christian Right (or even Ashcroft, for that matter), Conrad’s cartoon equating the two is totally repugnant.
Shame on you.
