Two Notable Women

Thanks for the front-page story “Eudora Welty, Voice of Southern Simplicity, Dies” (July 24). While Welty had her own voice, she used it to listen to ordinary people and to give voice to their ordinary lives. It was noted that Welty’s voice was stifled by an editor who decided that a woman should not write about war. She needed to use a male pseudonym.
Newspaper publisher Katharine Graham was eulogized in the same issue. While she started her own career as a journalist, it was noted that Graham did not find her own voice until after the tragic death of her husband.
The juxtaposition of the lives and deaths of these two women and their HERitage for women and men seems worthy of note.
