Electoral College

Release of the media-sponsored Florida vote recount has stimulated several letters again calling for abolition of the electoral college. Appealing as that might be, the odds of that ever happening are slim to none. It requires a constitutional amendment that the small states are sure to block, as they did when Richard Nixon tried it.
A more probable resolution would be for all states to apportion their electoral votes to match the popular vote in their state, as a handful of states have done already. Then the electoral vote would reflect the popular vote. This resolution is under the control of the states and does not require a constitutional amendment. Let me know when the Democrats who control California are ready to let some of the state’s electoral votes go to Republicans.
