Volcanic Peril Seen at Yucca Mountain

A Nevada state geologist said the U.S. Energy Department is downplaying the risk of volcanic eruptions at Yucca Mountain, where the government has proposed storing nuclear waste.
“If you stand atop Yucca Mountain and look at relatively young volcanoes, it’s obvious something is going on here,” Steve Frishman of the Nevada Nuclear Projects Agency said at a hearing.
Frishman referred to several cinder cones that protrude like stepping stones from the desert west of the mountain at the western edge of the Nevada Test Site, about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
