A convicted killer who escaped from a prison near Beaumont was captured while sleeping in a stolen pickup truck about 300 miles away in Hattiesburg, Miss., authorities said.
Harold Laird, 26, escaped through a hole he widened around a ceiling light fixture in his cell.
He was found in a truck that had been reported stolen from Slidell, La. It was parked outside an abandoned grocery store.
The concern about Laird had been heightened because inside another truck he stole to make his escape was a .22-caliber rifle and 500 rounds of ammunition. However, no weapon was found when Laird was arrested.
