Fight Against Wetland Protection Urged

The congressman-elect who will replace Gary Condit urged landowners to fight a plan giving more protection to fairy shrimp and other wetland species.
“This is a governmental process that has run amok,” Dennis Cardoza (D-Merced) said Monday.
A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan would declare 750,000 acres in San Joaquin Valley and Sierra foothill counties critical habitat, which would preserve plants and animals in vernal pools. About 340,000 acres owned by 1,100 people would be designated critical habitat.
