Kyoto Pact OKd; Others Urged to Follow Suit

Japan ratified the Kyoto Protocol on global warming, which it signed at a U.N. climate conference in 1997, and said it would urge other countries, including Russia and the U.S., to do the same.
“The Kyoto treaty is an important international step toward tackling global warming. I very much hope that other countries will join as soon as possible,” Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi was quoted as saying afterward.
Under the protocol, industrialized nations must cut emissions of greenhouse gases by an average of 5% over the period 2008-12. Japan pledged to cut its output by 6%.
