Bridge Column Helpful to Nonexpert Players

I must strongly disagree with Richard Young’s criticism (Letters, Feb. 25) that Frank Stewart’s bridge column is “too cutesy and advanced for most readers.”

I am far from an expert player, but I find Stewart’s column consistently provides valuable learning experiences to readers of all bridge levels. Stewart’s columns generally contain multiple levels of instruction, first showing the reader a respectable way to bid and play (or defend) a hand, and then a better way. Stewart’s column is unique in its frequent inclusion of intelligence and wit on a wide range of nonbridge subjects. If Young wishes to characterize these aspects of Stewart’s column as “cutesy,” then it is apparent that he is using a different dictionary than mine.
