Pepperdine Beats Manhattan

Pepperdine defeated Manhattan College, 30-15, 30-20, 30-15, in the first round of the NCAA Division I women’s volleyball tournament Thursday night in front of 1,117 at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu.

The Waves (26-2) will next play Kansas (22-10), which defeated Long Beach State.

Outside hitter Katie Wilkins, the West Coast Conference player of the year, led the Waves with 15 kills. Goedel Van Cauteren had 11 kills and 11 digs for the Jaspers (21-14).

The 49ers lost to Kansas, 30-23, 30-28, 30-28, and finished with a 19-11 record. The Jayhawks had four players record double-digits in kills, led by Sarah Rome (17). Setter Andi Rozum had 51 assists.

Erika Chidester led Long Beach with 14 kills and 13 digs.

In the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II tournament at Cal State San Bernardino, the Coyotes defeated Tampa, 30-27, 28-30, 30-26, 30-20.

San Bernardino (29-4) will play Concordia-St. Paul in the semifinals tonight at 7:30. The Golden Bears (31-3) defeated Queens College of New York, 30-21, 30-22, 30-23.

In the other semifinal at 5 p.m., North Alabama plays Grand Valley State. North Alabama beat Lock Haven, 23-30, 30-25, 24-30, 31-29, 15-7. Grand Valley State beat Nebraska Kearney, 34-32, 30-26, 30-17.
