MTA Drivers Authorize Walkout if Talks Fail

Drivers for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s bus and rail system voted Wednesday to authorize a walkout if labor talks with the agency break down.
The contract for drivers ends June 30. MTA officials say they will honor the old contract if a new deal is not forged by then. The vote allows leadership of the drivers union, the United Transportation Union, to call a strike if talks fail.
In 2000, the drivers struck for 32 days, shutting down one of the nation’s largest transit systems.
In January, when the MTA’s contract with its mechanics expired, members also voted to authorize a strike if needed.
