Sacramento County and 10 water utilities are suing major gas companies over potential contamination of the area’s groundwater.
In a lawsuit filed last week, prosecutors and the utilities contend that the companies doubled amounts of the additive MTBE a few years ago to meet clean-air laws without telling the public that it was a threat.
The lawsuit takes the unusual step of claiming damages for the threat to drinking-water wells. It asks that the firms pay for the full probe, along with treatment and prevention of potential MTBE contamination.
