Ivory Coast’s government fired the chief of the national police, two days after an officer was accused of fatally shooting a French radio reporter. The decision to fire Gen. Adolphe Baby came at a night meeting of President Laurent Gbagbo and his Cabinet.
In a statement, the Cabinet said it “deplores this odious and unacceptable act.” Jean Helene, 50, a regional reporter for Radio France Internationale, was shot in the back of the head Tuesday night while waiting to interview jailed opposition figures in the commercial capital, Abidjan.
