Coal Mine Blast in Northern City Kills 33

A coal mine explosion in China’s northern city of Yangquan killed 33 people, the official New China News Agency reported.
It said that 28 miners were killed in the explosion at the Daxian Sankeng Colliery. Five people who descended into the shaft in a rescue attempt also were killed. Thick toxic gas clouded the mine, the agency said.
An investigation was underway. About 40 other miners who were working at the time were able to escape, the agency said.
