Illinois Stuns UCLA, 78-63

Led by Angelina Williams’ 30 points, Illinois made a season-high 60.8% of its shots to upset No. 16-ranked UCLA, 78-63, in women’s basketball Sunday at Champaign, Ill.

The Bruins, who had trailed by seven at halftime, tied the score, 47-47, with 14:06 left, but the Illini (6-2) took control with a 9-0 run, sparked by a Janelle Hughes’ three-point field goal.

The victory was the Illini’s second over a ranked team this season. Illinois beat then-No. 21 Louisiana Tech, 71-65, in overtime Dec. 4. Nikki Blue paced UCLA (6-2) with 17 points, and Lisa Willis added 15. Noelle Quinn added 14 points on seven-for-19 shooting for UCLA, which shot 40.6%.

“They did a great job with their athletic ability, just going after the ball,” UCLA Coach Kathy Olivier said.

Illinois had a 37-27 rebounding edge, including 20-10 in the second half. The Bruins had 12 second-chance points off of 10 first-half rebounds but were limited to only four offensive boards after halftime.

No. 5 North Carolina 79, Georgia State 44 -- Ivory Latta had 17 points and a career-high 13 assists to lead the Tar Heels (9-1) at Myrtle Beach, S.C. Georgia State (3-3) made 25 turnovers and only three of 21 three-point shots.

No. 7 Notre Dame 50, Marquette 47 -- At the buzzer, Jacqueline Batteast made the only Fighting Irish three-point field goal for the victory at Milwaukee. Batteast finished with a game-high 27 points. Muffet McGraw notched her 394th victory, passing Digger Phelps for the most wins by a Notre Dame coach. McGraw is 394-150.

Before Batteast’s three-point shot, Marquette (6-3) had tied Notre Dame (10-1), at 47-47, on Danielle Kamm’s three-pointer with 6.7 seconds left.

No. 9 Tennessee 82, Texas Christian 55 -- Shyra Ely scored 23 points and former Lynwood standout Sa’de Wiley-Gatewood added three three-point field goals in her collegiate debut to fuel the Lady Vols (7-2) at Knoxville, Tenn. Sandora Irvin’s 21 points and 16 rebounds led the Horned Frogs (7-4).

No. 11 Michigan St. 62, Texas A&M; Corpus Christi 56 -- Liz Shimek had 25 points for the Spartans (9-1), who closed the game with a 12-2 run to beat the Islanders (8-2) at East Lansing, Mich.

Virginia Tech 71, No. 12 Texas Tech 70 -- The Hokies (7-2) rallied from a 13-point deficit to tie it, 60-60, at the end of regulation and then held on after taking a 71-68 lead over the Red Raiders (6-2) with 29 seconds left in overtime at Las Vegas.

No. 15 Georgia 96, Iona 52 -- Tasha Humphrey had 22 points in only 14 minutes at New Rochelle, N.Y., as the Bulldogs (8-3) beat the Gaels (2-7) and produced Coach Andy Landers’ 700th victory.
