Panda Count Grows, but Concern Doesn’t Shrink

The number of giant pandas counted in the wild in China has jumped more than 40% to 1,590, but they remain endangered because their scattered habitat makes breeding difficult, the government said.
Forestry officials attributed the rise to conservation efforts. But the Worldwide Fund for Nature cautioned that the increase may be because of more reliable surveying methods and not necessarily a population increase.
