Muti gets a cheery reception in N.Y.

Maestro Riccardo Muti let the music do the talking at his Thursday night performance with the New York Philharmonic, his first gig since resigning April 2 from La Scala, the Milan opera house where he became embroiled in a battle with the musicians and other theater workers.
In the days before the Philharmonic concert, Muti’s representatives said the maestro would not grant interviews.
As soon as Muti walked on stage at Avery Fisher Hall, he was greeted with enthusiastic applause and shouts of “Viva Muti!” and “Bravo!”
“We really love him,” principal violist Cynthia Phelps said in an interview during intermission. “He’s great. He’s just a fine musician. I’m sorry he’s involved in a political mess.”
Following additional performances in New York this weekend, Muti heads back to Europe for concerts in early May with the Vienna Philharmonic. One of the concerts -- on May 2 -- is at La Scala.
