Many factors delay rebuilding

“Home? Not Yet,” Dec. 11, suggested that insurance troubles alone have prevented homeowners from rebuilding after the 2003 Southern California firestorms. Any number of factors can cause construction delays after the loss of a home, including changes in the building codes in older communities and contractor delays as well as the property owners’ own challenges coming to grips with the loss.

The recovery process can indeed be daunting, and often traumatic. But it does not have to be lengthy. Preparing for the worst by keeping a current home inventory and making an effort to update insurance annually not only helps keep the recovery process on track, but it is also credited with getting some firestorm victims back into rebuilt homes as early as six months after the flames were extinguished.
