UC Berkeley, City End Expansion Fight
BERKELEY — The city and its university have settled a spat over campus expansion plans.
City officials had sued to block UC Berkeley construction and had demanded millions in sewer and parking fees. But in an agreement approved Wednesday by UC’s governing Board of Regents, the suit was settled and the city agreed to drop the fee demands. UC Berkeley, which had been paying $500,000 a year for services such as sewage and fire protection, will raise that amount to $1.2 million.
Under the agreement, the city and university will jointly develop a plan for revitalizing downtown Berkeley.
