Oil Spill Blackens Central Coastline

Rescue workers battled to stop a huge oil spill from further polluting the central Philippine coastline as fishermen, smeared with the foul-smelling sludge, returned to shore with empty nets.
Fishing grounds, dive spots and a marine reserve were contaminated and the livelihoods of thousands of people were threatened after a tanker carrying 528,360 gallons of fuel oil sank off Guimaras Island on Friday.
The government declared the island a disaster zone, and officials said the spill could affect 120 miles of coastline.
