* at Cleveland 4, Chicago 0: Paul Byrd pitched six strong innings in his first official start of the season. He had come within one strike of an abbreviated no-hitter on April 6. That was Cleveland’s scheduled home opener -- which was snowed out with two out in the top of the fifth inning and the Indians leading the Seattle Mariners, 4-0. Byrd’s first pitch against the White Sox was a called strike -- exactly what he needed eight days earlier.
* Detroit 10, at Toronto 7: Pinch-hitter Marcus Thames hit a go-ahead, two-run double against B.J. Ryan in the ninth inning. The Blue Jays led, 7-6, when Ryan walked Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen with one out. Thames, batting for Sean Casey, then hit a broken-bat double to left.
* at Minnesota 12, Tampa Bay 5: Former Dodger Edwin Jackson (0-2), who posted a solid 1.74 earned-run average in spring training, walked five and yielded three hits, giving up five runs -- four earned -- in three innings. “I just pitched with no conviction,” he said.
* at Seattle 8, Texas 3: Adrian Beltre and Jose Guillen hit their first home runs of the season, and the Mariners overcame the 590th homer of Sammy Sosa’s career.
* at Baltimore 6, Kansas City 4: Chris Gomez hit a grand slam in the sixth inning as the Orioles rallied to hand the Royals their fourth loss in a row.
* New York 4, at Oakland 3 (13 innings): Jason Giambi homered with one out in the 13th inning. Brian Bruney (1-1), New York’s eighth pitcher of the game, threw two scoreless innings for the win a night after losing the game in the 11th inning. Seven relievers combined for 7 2/3 scoreless innings for the Yankees.
* at Boston 8, Angels 0: Curt Schilling (2-1) pitched eight innings to extend his scoreless streak to 14.
