A moving review of Springsteen

ANN POWERS’ album review of Springsteen’s “Magic” [“Springsteen Sings for the Believers,” Sept. 30] did the near-impossible: It moved me.
I haven’t heard the album yet, but if it’s a fraction of what she describes -- evocative of our shared past yet planted all too firmly in a shaky present, but still rockin’ -- it’ll be a Bruce blast at a time when maybe we really need it.

Ann Powers, I am a true believer in you. Your insight never disappoints and always reflects the heart and poetry of the music. I saw Bruce in one of his few solo performances years ago at the San Diego Civic Center and think I may never want to see him again in a large venue with the band. I understood every word of every song and never tired of that nearly three-hour-straight performance. It was magnificent.

I have been a fan of Ann Powers’ writing since the New York Times. While I appreciate all her reviews, her review of the new Springsteen album was one of the best-crafted reviews I have ever read, and I’ve read thousands. Every word, phrase, thought and reference demonstrated her wide knowledge and love of the arts in general and keen intellect, making it fun for the reader, yet personal to her.
