Condemned inmate wins a reprieve

James Harvey Callahan, a convicted murderer who would have become the nation’s first executed inmate since September, won a reprieve from the U.S. Supreme Court a little more than an hour before he was scheduled to die by lethal injection at a prison in Atmore.
The high court’s order did not detail why it granted the stay. The court is weighing a ruling on whether or not lethal injection is cruel and unusual punishment.
