LAX workers are warned of possible furloughs

With Los Angeles facing close to a $1-billion budget shortfall next year, the city agency overseeing Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday sent a memo to employees warning of possible “short-term furloughs.”
For the last few months, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has said repeatedly that all cost-cutting measures would be considered to address the shortfall, including layoffs and an early retirement program, and that negotiations with the city’s labor unions were ongoing. Details will be laid out in Villaraigosa’s proposed 2009-10 budget, which he will submit to the City Council on April 20.
“In light of the city’s significant budget shortfall for fiscal year 09/10, the mayor is considering implementing short-term furloughs to reduce costs and hopefully reduce the need for layoffs,” Paula Adams, personnel director for Los Angeles World Airports, wrote in a memo to employees.
Adams added that the furloughs, if implemented, would include employees at the city’s proprietary departments: the airports, Port of Los Angeles and Department of Water and Power.
Last year, Villaraigosa had plans to impose worker furloughs to save $23 million. He scrapped the idea after the unions agreed to make up the shortfall by applying $18.25 million in unused healthcare money to the city budget and through other measures.
