Superhero wanted: Broadway’s ‘Spider-Man’ seeks new star

“Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” is looking east and west for a new superhero.
Reeve Carney, who originated the title role, will depart the production Sept. 15, launching a bicoastal search to find the musical’s new star as well as a future Mary Jane, the role currently filled by Rebecca Faulkenberry.
In Los Angeles, tryouts will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 12 at the Hollywood United Methodist Church. In New York, a casting call is set for 10 a.m. Aug. 19 at the Stage 48 & Sky-Lounge.

Carney made his Broadway debut as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and has been with the musical since the show previewed in 2010.
To fill Carney’s tights, producers are looking for males in their late teens to early 20s of any ethnicity with a “great rock singing voice” and a “nerdy,” “understated sex appeal.”
The musical, which at $75 million holds the Broadway record for most expensive production, has had high-profile off-stage sagas.
In 2011, director Julie Taymor was fired from the show, prompting a lawsuit that in April was settled out of court. And several stuntmen have been injured during high-flying stunts.
