Southbound 5 Freeway near Sun Valley reopened after collision, roadwork

All southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway in the Sun Valley area, which were shut down after a fatal collision, were open to traffic early Tuesday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
A stretch of the freeway near the intersection with the 170 Freeway was cleared late Monday after a fatal collision. The same area was closed until about 4:15 a.m. for planned maintenance by state transportation crews, CHP Officer Alex Rubio said.
A victim was struck by at least one vehicle on the busy freeway about 7:35 p.m. Monday, causing a massive traffic jam on the heavily traveled transportation artery. The victim was trying to cross the freeway after fleeing the scene of an accident on the 170 Freeway, but was struck by a car traveling at about 65 mph, according to CHP.
Vehicles spilled onto adjacent streets and freeways as fire engines maneuvered on the freeway. The body was removed by coroner’s officials shortly before 10 p.m. The victim’s mother was notified, CHP said, but the cause of the collision was still under investigation.
