Relay for Life nets $18,500 for cancer research

About 80 to 90 participants flocked to El Morro Elementary School Saturday for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Laguna Beach.
The 12-hour event, held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., raised $18,500, with most of the money slated for cancer research, said Elizabeth Pianalto, an Orange County community manager for the society.
Relay For Life teams take turns walking or running around a track or path at a local high school, park or fairground.
Events are up to 24 hours long, and each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times, according to a description on the society’s website.
Relay events begin with all cancer survivors taking a ceremonial lap, called the survivors’ lap, that marks their triumph over the disease.
