Letters: No more Filners or Weiners

Re “Filner says he’ll enter therapy,” July 27
Is there such an incredible absence of individuals who could serve as respected leaders of major cities such as San Diego and New York that we have to put up with the antics and despicable behavior of San Diego Mayor Bob Filner and New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner?
Taxpayers deserve honorable representation from their elected officials, and it’s hard to believe that these two could give their constituents an honest day’s work. The therapy they have publicly admitted they need should be done on their own time.

Filner’s announcement that he will undergo intensive therapy to improve his behavior toward women makes me wonder whether, say, volunteer work by Richard Nixon for a group designed to combat chronic lying would have permitted him to remain as president.
Does the term “rhetorical question” ring a bell?
